Basketball England Level 1 Award in Coaching Basketball

Course description

This is the basic level of coaching qualification, which gives outline knowledge of basketball, and enables the holder to introduce basketball and to assist a coach award holder (or above). The holder is not covered by the association's insurance for working unsupervised and must work under the supervision of a minimum of a level 2 coach award holder.

Learners can expect to cover the following:

  • Passing (including getting free and catching the ball)
  • Shooting
  • Dribbling
  • Individual offence
  • Individual defence
  • Playing the game and simple tactics
  • Introducing the game to beginners
  • Basic rules
  • Organising practice sessions
  • Communication skills
  • Teaching players the skills of passing, set shooting, lay-ups, footwork, dribbling and basic one v one and team play.

Who is the course for?

Individuals who usually attend this course are parents of performers, sports centre staff, teachers, youth workers, players or ex-players, interested adults, students etc

What's the value of this course?

This course is ideal for learners who are seeking voluntary or paid roles as an assistant basketball coach.

Learner eligibility

Learners must:

  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Be appropriately identified
  • Be able to communicate effectively in English (this includes listening, speaking, reading and writing).

Assessment (if applicable)

Learners for this award shall be assessed by the course tutor taking a minimum of one 10 minutes coaching session with a group of players (6-10). The course tutor is responsible for continual assessment of the students for the duration of the course and for making the final decision regarding gaining the award

The course is usually delivered over 2 days.

This course can lead to further learning or training in the area of coaching basketball and/or other related areas.
