Big Cycle Revolution are encouraging people to get on their bike!
It's an initiative designed to help make cycling in Birmingham to be more fun, safe and easy. Whether that's cycling to the park, to the shops or for fitness and pleasure, they truly have something for all the family.
Through the Big Birmingham Bikes project - they have given away over 3,000 bikes to people who might otherwise have struggled to get one, and offer free daily loans of bikes from some of their cycle centres. They run numerous activities and training sessions to help people improve cycling skills, have fun and meet new people. These include Led rides, Learn to ride, Ride active, Day loan of bikes, Wheels for all, Maintenance training
It's all part of the vision to make cycling an everyday way to travel in Birmingham over the next 20 years. Birmingham Cycle Revolution want 5% of all trips in the city to be made by bike by 2023 and to double this again to 10% by 2033. This will help to make our city healthier, greener, safer and less congested.
To achieve this, Birmingham Cycle Revolution aim to:
• Improve cycling conditions on popular main roads and parallel routes into the city centre;
• Provide quiet cycling routes and 20mph areas within residential areas;
• Upgrade towpaths on canals;
• Develop new cycling green routes through parks and open spaces;
• Improve local links to cycle routes;
• Provide new secure cycle parking hubs;
• Develop cycle loan and hire schemes to make it easier for people to get started.
The Birmingham Cycle Revolution project is supported by the Big Birmingham Bikes programme of free bikes, cycle training, and activities with employers, schools and communities to encourage cycling. You can even get rewarded for cycling with the Better Points app.
