The annual business games took place on Wednesday evening (5th July) and Team BCU Tigers won by the tightest of margins.
The tournament featured twenty workplaces from Birmingham taking part in an ultimate multi-sport festival organised by Sport Birmingham and LoveBrum. Friends and colleagues joined together in activities they do not always get the opportunity to take part in.
Paul Faulkner, Sport Birmingham chairman and Greater Birmingham Chambers of Commerce chief executive, said: "This year's Birmingham Business Games was a really well-attended and fiercely contested event.
"With Birmingham's bid to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games gaining more and more momentum, it was great to see the business community embracing the city's strong sporting culture.
"Thank you to Purple Frog Property for supporting the event as headline sponsor and congratulations to BCU Tigers"
Following the commonwealth theme, the evening began with an opening ceremony and a mass warm-up led by personal trainers from B-fast fitness. Teams were then divided into rounds of dodgeball, disco-spin, sitting volleyball, mini doubles tennis and a retro team challenge.
Debutants Weightmans LLP dominated sitting volleyball and dodgeball as PIB Insurance came out on top in mini doubles tennis. However it was youth sport charity Sport 4 life who looked the favourites after strong performances mini-tennis, dodgeball and sitting volleyball.
After a hard fought and close night of action, it was BCU Tigers who stole victory with standout performances in disco-spin, dodgeball and the retro team challenge. BCU Tiger's also won the basketball challenge which took place earlier in the evening.
Gary Mclean, BCU Sports Development officer and one of the participants of the day said "We are delighted to have won the Purple Frog Birmingham Business Games, our staff are tremendously proud of their achievements and thoroughly enjoyed participating in the competition."
"The evening demonstrated the impact that sport can have on people and the feedback we have received from our members has illustrated that particularly around the social engagement with members of staff that they had never met before and how fun the activities were."
"We have enjoyed the celebrations and hope that this will inspire others to come and get involved in social and recreational sport at BCU in the future to defend our title next year."
Sponsor's Purple Frog Property said "This year's Business Games were the best yet. Congratulations to the Sport Birmingham and LoveBrum volunteers who made the event challenging but also a whole lot of fun. Also, thanks to all of the other teams who took part – it was brilliant fun competing against you all. Especially well done to the Birmingham City University for their win, particularly as it was their first year competing. Purple Frog is very proud to be associated with the Games and we're looking forward to the 2018 competition!"
The Birmingham Business Games first launched with eight teams in 2015 and now has now grown into a 20 team event for the second year running. It is organised by charities Sport Birmingham and LoveBrum. This year it took place at the new Sport and Fitness Centre at University of Birmingham and managed to raise over £2500 this year for local sports causes.
