The evening of Wednesday, September 20 will mark the 2017 edition of the Birmingham Sports Awards – a fantastic event which allows sportspeople the opportunity to switch their sports kit for black-tie attire. The evening is a phenomenal occasion which sees sporting success, at all levels whether it be amateur or professional, celebrated in the same way.
These sporting achievements will be recognised across 13 categories including the Club Of The Year category, which, this year has resonated with and subsequently gained the sponsorship of Sport Birmingham.
The Club Of The Year category takes into account all aspects of a sporting club both on and off the pitch. Eventual finalists of this category will likely have demonstrated their work towards gaining a ClubMark or similar club accreditation and will have developed their offering significantly over the years.
James Grinsted, Club and Community Manager at Sport Birmingham, is responsible for leading the clubs and community organisations including ClubMark assessments as well as implementing their Satellite Club Programme and was therefore perfectly positioned to discuss their association with the 'Club of the Year' category at this year's awards.
He said: "Sports clubs play an integral role in their local communities by promoting the benefits of being physically active and in providing a development pathways for athletes to excel in their chosen sport. Elite level sports professionals representing our country have, at one stage in their career, been part of a sports club that helped to foster and nurture their talent to get them to where they are today.
"Clubs are also the backbone to grassroots sports and deserve recognition for continually achieving success in often challenging circumstances, which is why Sport Birmingham has chosen to sponsor the Club Of The Year category again in 2017."
As the sports partner of the city, Sport Birmingham contribute significantly to the sporting community of Birmingham something James expanded on: "We are the headline partner of the Birmingham Sports Awards , and the city's sports partnership. Our organisation supports all those that develop, deliver and take part in sport and physical activity in Birmingham. For this reason, showing our support for this celebration event allows us to thank our partners for continuing to inspire and develop opportunities to be active in every community."
The Birmingham Sports Awards is known for bringing great benefits to everyone involved, not least the sponsors. James highlighted just some of the benefits being involved with awards of this kind, brings to Sport Birmingham as a whole: "We have traditionally worked most effectively through the established facility and sports club network, which is vast in the region; increasingly we will be helping and advising new clubs and new organisations who wish to deliver sport and activity for the community.
"To that end, the sports awards raise our profile significantly and make more providers as well as many businesses aware of the work we do and the impact we have."
To conclude, James explained how sporting events help raise the profile of the city: "We are all extremely excited about the potential of bringing the Commonwealth Games to the City in 2022, and we believe in the important opportunity that this provides to promote and grow community sport through sports clubs.
For us to maximise this opportunity we will need to recognise the ability and capacity for clubs to grow, as well as for new ones to emerge; this requires us to lead the support and investment into this delivery network so that there can be a real legacy in terms of increased numbers of people participating in sports clubs."
Nominations for the Birmingham Sports Awards are open until August 11, after that the applications will be placed into the judges' hands where they will select three finalists for each category. There are 13 awards in total up for grabs.
