Cheap ways to be active in Birmingham
Posted: Wed, 09 Jan 2019 14:30
You've heard it all before in January "new year new me, this is my year" etc etc but one of the main barriers leading to inactivity is cost! January is a month where you might be trying to eat better and move more, however, most people feel this requires a drastic OTT solution costing top draw that isn't sustainable. With that in mind here are my suggestions to move more and build activity into your daily routine!
1) Activity doesn't have to be an added extra!
What I mean by this is, we're constantly in a cycle of trying to make time for a lot of different things e.g friends, eating right, work, life. When you add activity sometimes it can feel like your to do list is becoming exhaustive. Why not try building activity into your everyday routine? It may take longer at the beginning but think about how super fit you'll be in the long run! Try getting off the bus one stop earlier, cycling to work a few days a week or even just parking the car further away at the supermarket so you have to work for that shop. This handy council map also allows you to see routes near you and what kind they are.
2) Free Sessions in Brum
As part of the wellbeing offer within the city, The Be Active Scheme is a free scheme open to Birmingham residents. This runs across a number of leisure sites throughout the city, which means you can access a range of classes including the gym and swimming at various times. All you need is proof of a Birmingham postcode and away you go. In terms of a broader range of activities, at a smaller cost try our Activity Finder where you can see a wealth of local opportunities.
3) Love a deal
Whilst my first point mentions building activity into your daily routine i.e using your legs more for transport, some people love the space and time a gym surrounding gives them. January is your opportunity to kick start that habit cheaply with some of the bigger chain gyms offering reduced rates or no joining fees .e.g. EasyGym If you want to try something slightly more intense and group based with in-built studio tech F45 have recently opened in the City Centre offering a 2 week free trial.
4) More canals than Venice
Whilst this piece of trivia I often hear, I'd debate if we actually use our canals as effectively as the Venetians and their gondolas. However, our canals and not to mention nearby parks are all free! What better way to feel out of the city whilst still in the city! Plus the Edgbaston canal towpath has recently been widen to grab your bike and get going, check Canals & River Trust site for more ideas.
5) Workout at Work
Having to workout on your own can sometimes be a drag, make it a group event with your colleagues. Now I'll let you take this extreme as you want, but some easy wins could be: having a standing meeting, taking the stairs instead of the lifts, lunchtime Yoga or a walk around the block even a run around the block with GoodGym. Go wild with it!
Hope these tips give you a bit of inspiration, let me know how you get on!
