TOn Saturday 21st September, a local Birmingham Wrestling Club 'Impact Fitness Academy CIC' hosted the 2nd National Freestyle Wrestling Competition for 5 - 16 year olds.
Led by lead Coach Farid and Club Manager Sahara Mohammed, they welcomed over 100 competitors and their families from all over the country to Joseph Chamberlain Health and Fitness Centre for the big event.
Olympic Freestyle Wrestling, a sport that's not heavily promoted in the media, yet with events like these we increase the opportunities for young people to compete and we can see first-hand the effect it has on young people and their behaviour. Entering the venue you were immediately hit with a roar of excitement and coaches shouting from the side lines "drive", "hold him" and "that's it"! After every competition, competitors shake hands with their opponents and coaches, with tears in their eyes despite their losses, or with admiration and respect as they defeat their opponents. A perfect demonstration of sportsmanship at its finest.
Competitions and events like this don't run without the people behind it. Impact Fitness Academy with their team of volunteers provided the venue, food, equipment and officials. With the Commonwealth Games coming to Birmingham in 2022, we want more activities like this in the city to showcase what local Brum has to offer.
