Black Lives Matter: Statement from Sport Birmingham
Posted: Mon, 15 Jun 2020 08:46
The awful killing of George Floyd on 25 May 2020, and the events that have unfolded globally since then have saddened and troubled us.
At Sport Birmingham, we are incredibly proud to work with so many diverse individuals, communities and organisations. It's what we do, every day, without thinking.
In our team meeting last week, we spent time openly reflecting on the recent events – how it's made us feel, what it represents and what we stand for. We're feeling "hurt," "embarrassed," "upset," "concerned."
Inequality and racism exists across our society. It's been around for hundreds of years and it's not going away anytime soon. While we felt largely unqualified to add our voice to the Black Lives Matter conversation last week, we have been listening, talking, thinking and reflecting.
Our commitment to our vision and values stands stronger than ever. The recent events have moved us to honestly reflect on our own culture and how we operate as an organisation – our staff and systems, how we engage people and communities through our work, and how we can better listen, learn and influence. We are committing to a programme of practical review, action and learning that creates system change and improves lives. This includes:
- Our projects and programmes: Examining our current methods of connecting and engaging with BAME communities and other underrepresented groups to better understand, and respond to the broader challenges and opportunities for different audiences.
- Our Equality & Diversity Policy and approach: Ensuring that as well as protected characteristics, we consider the many other aspects of people's lives, ensuring that equality, diversity and inclusion is at the heart of everything we do.
We collectively agree that this isn't just about strategies and systems. We will provide a platform for the voices and stories not currently being heard within Birmingham's communities.
We welcome your input and will continue to share this with you.
