We are delighted to announce Birmingham's first Active School Hero, in partnership with Nike and ukactive. Gemma Spiers from Paget Primary School in Erdington has been chosen as the winner from all of the nominations received across the city. Gemma is the Pastoral Manager at the school and has delivered a whole school approach to getting children active all the way from Reception to Year 6, both inside and outside the classroom.
We have been working in partnership with ukactive and Nike since February to identify primary school staff across the city that make an outstanding contribution to getting kids moving. Unsurprisingly there were plenty of nominations received for the awards, and these were shortlisted to a winning Active School Hero from each of the 10 districts of Birmingham, and now from that list an overall Birmingham winner.
We have also been supported throughout this programme by 3 local Activity Influencers – Owen Lamprey, Dean Hadley and Clare Hoods-Truman, and we thank all 3 of them for their hard work and effort in supporting this programme and also their ongoing efforts within their own schools to ensure physical activity is a key part of children's daily lives.
James Grinsted, Senior Partnerships Manager, said: "It has been great to work with Nike and ukactive on the Active School Hero programme this year. It has obviously been a very challenging year for schools and therefore it is even more important to recognise and celebrate the great work that is happening in schools across the city to ensure children are enjoying being active. Congratulations to all of the district winners and further congratulations to Gemma as the overall Birmingham winner."
