Vélo Birmingham & Midlands 2019
Vélo Birmingham & Midlands (formerly Vélo Birmingham) is returning on Sunday 12 May with an epic new 100 mile route that will take 17,000 riders on an unforgettable journey through the West Midlands! Once again starting in the heart of Birmingham City Centre, our improved route will take riders through the heart of the 2021 Capital of Culture, Coventry, where they will cycle on the cobbled roads surrounding the historic Coventry Cathedral.
In between these two epic city centre adventures, riders will enjoy cycling through Solihull, Warwickshire, Dudley and Sandwell where they will encounter stunning countryside, panoramic views, picturesque villages and iconicclimbs... not to mention the tens of thousands of local residents lining the streets to cheer them on!
We are recruiting a large number of volunteers to support activity both in our venues and along the closed road route. Volunteers are not paid but will benefit from experiencing a large, live event and the general enjoyment of supporting a local event.
Volunteers will be briefed in advance at a face-to-face briefing and will receive further instruction on the event day/weekend by the manager in their area. Furthermore, they will be provided with an event volunteer t-shirt to identify them as well as refreshments during their shift.
The Start and Finish of the event take place within Birmingham City Centre and here we'll also host a number of participant facilities. Some examples of the roles we are recruiting for within the venue are:
- At the Info Point / Help Desk offering help to participants and spectators with general event information.
- In the Start Pens helping the cyclists find their start pen and ensuring they get to the start line smoothly!
- In the Rewards Area handing out the well-earned medals at the finish line - and the 'congratulations'!
Whilst the activities listed above take place on the event day, Sunday 12 May, we also have some activity planned for Saturday 11 May, when participants will be registering and collecting their rider packs at a central Birmingham venue. This busy operation will require some enthusiastic volunteers and may include some of the roles below:
- In the Arrivals team welcoming and directing participants to their registration desk
- Manning a Registration Desk helping the cyclists register and handing out their rider packs
At regular intervals along the route our cyclists will find Pit Stops where they can top up water bottles, find toilet facilities, seek first aid and most importantly take advantage of our supply of energy drinks and snacks. At each Pit Stop we enlist the support of Volunteers to help distribute the items – and encouraging the participants on the remainder of their challenge! Pit Stops are great places for groups to volunteer but individuals are also very very welcome.
